In August 2025, the global epoxy putty market was rocked by major manufacturing companies in the United States scaling back or stopping altogether the production of epoxy putty sticks. The industrial maintenance industry was hit first but now the ramifications have filtered through to the model making supply chain and are impacting one popular epoxy putty in particular – Green Stuff.
What has caused Green Stuff supply issues?
The driver of Green Stuff supply issues is tariffs. US manufacturers of epoxy putty sticks whose raw materials come from abroad now face increased production costs. The Department of Commerce imposed anti-dumping duties as high as 355 percent at one point on epoxy resins imported from China, India, South Korea and Thailand.
Epoxy putty stick manufacturers in the US are effectively being squeezed from both ends. Anti-dumping measures drive up the costs for importing raw components. At the same time, retaliatory tariffs make exporting finished products out of the country more expensive and challenging than ever.
As a result, some of the biggest, long-standing names in the epoxy putty stick market from the US are leaving it. Including PPG, who have shut their old Polymeric site and no longer manufacture Kneadatite or any of their other putty sticks.
SylCreate and Green Stuff
SylCreate’s parent company, Sylmasta LTD were the first company to introduce Green Stuff to the United Kingdom and European modelling market at Euro Millitaire in Folkestone during the 1990s.
It has been supplied by Sylmasta ever since, originally under the Sylmasta name and then through SylCreate after the business was split into separate brands for industrial maintenance products and model making, craft and restoration in 2020.
Crucially for the future of Green Stuff, Sylmasta HQ is home to the only epoxy putty stick plant in the United Kingdom. The plant already manufactures Geomfix Original for the modelling market; a softer, smoother, more-easily worked Milliput which sets extremely hard. SylCreate also supply Wesco Magic Sculp under our own brand.
Manufacturing a new Green Stuff
The investment in the latest epoxy putty stick manufacturing technology at Sylmasta HQ means we have the machinery capable of producing our own version of Green Stuff for sale to end-users and distributors worldwide, filling the void left by the departure of PPG from the market.
Making our own Green Stuff in-house is a project which has been under consideration for some time. The supply issues stemming from Green Stuff no longer being made have now made it a priority, and we can confirm development is underway on a new formulation compatible with our machinery.
The new product will be as close to the original as possible, although it will be impossible to replicate exactly. We will be moving away from the ribbon format for a number of reason; an important one being people frequently complain about cured bits down the middle of the strip where the two parts touch.
Instead, new Green Stuff will focus on the stick format. The intention is to provide one 50g stick of Part A and one 50g stick of Part B packed in a tube. This will also give users greater control over changing mix ratios.
Creating a new formulation for Green Stuff gives us a rare opportunity to tweak the properties of one of the world’s most popular modelling putties before it re-enters the supply chain.
